Yes, the title says it all.
Any seller, if they say that the jewellery is ‘Gold Plated’ or ‘1 Gram Gold Plated’ or ’18K Gold Plated’ – All those are big-time lies.
There is one electro-plating method using which metals are coated with gold but these days, that is not being done as it makes the jewellery expensive. Just think, 1 gram gold pendant and earrings set for Rs.1500/- or Rs.3000/-. How does that work when the cost of 1 gram gold itself is around Rs.2450 (as of 13th July 2015) (Edit: 3150/- as of 1st Oct 2016)?
Why does the seller lie to you so confidently? Because you will never get it tested if the plating is actually done with gold. In fact, you can’t because it is ‘microplated’, meaning, you can just scratch it off but not gather the dust to test.
Okay, so what do we want to convey here to you?
Two things:
a) Most of the times, meaning 99.999% of the times, the artificial jewellery you purchase are not actual gold plated but they are gold colour polished. (As we have been mentioning on our website).
b) Any metal except gold which is used in jewellery making (including silver) will turn black. The point you should see is, how long does it take to turn black. Good quality metal and polishing will take longer than a bad quality one. (Considering that you use your jewellery with care) and the good quality one can always be re-polished to make it look like new.
There are 2 types of gold colour polishings available in the market:
a) Polki type polish which looks like handmade jewellery and will not have a proper finish on the backside. (Front part will be good).
b) Rhodium finish – A perfect finish and a superior quality finish which will last for a very long time, sometimes even over a decade if maintained with proper care.
From now on, remember that only gold jewellery will be made of gold (at least 90% gold, if not 91.6%) and the rest is all artificial jewellery that doesn’t contain any gold.
Hope, this article helps you in making decisions when buying artificial jewellery.
