Here’s a word of caution regarding South Sea Pearls.
Fake south sea pearls have become rampant in the market. Normally, original and genuine South Sea pearls are priced between Rs.500 – Rs.1200 per carat (1 gram = 5 carats). If they’re sold any cheaper than this, there is reason enough to be suspicious. But at the same time, not all highly-priced South Sea pearls are real. So, how would you know a genuine south sea pearl from a fake one? A foolproof method is through ‘a lab test’ which can confirm the quality and the type of pearl.

What Happens During the Manufacture of Imitation South Sea Pearls?
Normal golden coloured pearls are chosen and synthesized in the lab to make them resemble South Sea Pearls. This process changes the natural smooth texture of the normal freshwater pearl to a crinkled texture with thin folds. If you happen to send these pearls for a lab test, they will most certainly be labelled as ‘Fresh Water Pearls’ instead of ‘South Sea Pearl/Cultured Pearls.
If you’re looking at buying South Sea Pearls, it makes sense to buy it from a legitimate pearl/gem dealer with a good reputation in the market. These dealers also provide certificates which will testify the authenticity of the pearls.
Why Are South Sea Pearls Expensive and How Do You Identify Them?
South Sea Pearls are very rare and unique. They come from the oysters living in the south sea areas such as Australia and China which have fresh and nutrient-rich water. South Sea Pearls are usually larger than the average pearls stones and are distinctly white or silver. The average size of a harvested south sea pearl stone is around 12 mm to 13 mm in diameter. Usually, the oyster of this pearl stone is larger than the freshwater pearl. Hence, the pearl produced is larger.
Given the rarity of the oyster, cultivation and production costs remain extremely high. Also the reason why South Sea Pearls are among the most expensive pearls in the market today.
