925 Sterling Silver
An alloy of 92.5% silver with 7.5% other metals, usually copper. The international standard for silver jewellery.
Pure silver is too soft to hold a setting, so it is alloyed. The 925 stamp certifies the silver content and is what the word sterling means.
Sterling tarnishes. The copper in the alloy reacts with sulphur in air, forming a dark film that polishes off without harming the metal.
Most sterling jewellery is rhodium plated, which delays tarnish and adds a brighter white finish.
When you are buying
Look for the 925 stamp on the clasp or an inner surface. Silver-coloured jewellery with no stamp is usually plated base metal, which is a different product at a different price.

Rhodium Plating
A thin layer of rhodium over silver or white gold, giving a bright white finish that resists tarnish.
Hallmark
An official stamp certifying precious metal purity. In India, BIS hallmarking is mandatory for gold jewellery.
Korean Metal
A light, corrosion-resistant alloy widely used for fashion jewellery findings. Holds plating well and does not rust.
Brass
A copper and zinc alloy with a warm gold tone. Strong and inexpensive, but it tarnishes and can react with skin.
