The Story of Pure Pearls

The woman who brought Hyderabadi pearls to the rest of India.

Chapter One

The Beginning

Kowmari T S has always been a storyteller. Not just in words, but in the way she builds brands, crafts experiences, and brings people closer to something exquisite. For her, pearls weren't just gemstones — they were a legacy, one that she set out to make accessible, beautiful, and affordable for every Indian woman.

Born and raised in Hyderabad, the city renowned for its legendary pearls, Kowmari grew up witnessing the unparalleled craftsmanship of Hyderabadi artisans.

But when she moved to Chennai for work, she noticed something missing — true, high-quality pearls weren't readily available, and when they were, they came with an exorbitant price tag. She realized that while Chennai, and the rest of India, had a deep love for pearls, there was no easy way to buy authentic, reasonably priced pearl jewellery.

This wasn't just a gap in the market. It was an opportunity. And Kowmari knew she was the one to bridge it.

A Side Hustle

2011

Every Saturday and Sunday, Kowmari would showcase pearl jewellery at pop-up exhibitions across Chennai. No deep pockets, no investors — just an unshakable vision and a table full of pearls.

2013

Customers kept asking: "Where can we buy this during the week?" So she launched Pure Pearls online — one of India's earliest jewellery-only e-commerce stores.

Kowmari was already a creative force in marketing and digital branding. She understood consumer behaviour, storytelling, and the power of e-commerce.

With a basic website and inventory stored in a tiny corner of her house, she personally managed everything — from photography and marketing to packaging and deliveries. It was a bootstrap operation, but what she lacked in resources, she made up for in determination.

Chapter Three

Online to Offline

As Pure Pearls' online presence grew, so did its reputation. Orders poured in from all over India, and Kowmari's keen eye for quality and fair pricing quickly made her brand a favourite.

But there was one recurring feedback from customers: "We want to see and feel the pearls before buying."

Renting a store in Chennai's premium locations was out of budget, but Kowmari wasn't deterred. She converted a tiny storage facility in Padmanabha Nagar, Adyar, into a functional shop — a place where customers could finally walk in, touch, feel, and try on their pearl jewellery before making a purchase.

It wasn't a grand showroom, but it was hers. And more importantly, it was the beginning of a bigger dream.

The COVID Storm

Then came COVID-19. Like many businesses, Pure Pearls' sales plummeted overnight. The uncertainty was brutal.

Instead of stepping back, Kowmari made her boldest move yet — she rebranded Pure Pearls completely, aligning it with a new era of digital shopping and modern design sensibilities. She introduced fresh collections, contemporary pearl designs, and a renewed focus on storytelling.

The strategy worked. As the world adjusted to the new normal, Pure Pearls emerged stronger than before. The demand returned, and this time, it was bigger than ever.

Pure Pearls moved into its own boutique-style showroom — a space that reflected the brand's evolution from a weekend side hustle to a full-fledged jewellery house.
