Amethyst gets its colour from iron and irradiation within the crystal. Deep purple with red flashes is the most valued.
It was a precious stone until huge Brazilian deposits were found in the nineteenth century, after which the price collapsed.
Strong heat turns it yellow, which is how most commercial citrine is made.
When you are buying
Prolonged sunlight fades amethyst. It is a good stone for evening pieces and a poor one for something worn outdoors every day.

The yellow to orange variety of quartz. Most of it is heat-treated amethyst, and it is often mis-sold as yellow sapphire.
