Pure Pearls Glossary

Gemstone

Metals & StonesAlso called gemstones, precious stones, semi precious

Any mineral or organic material cut for jewellery. Traditionally split into precious (diamond, ruby, sapphire, emerald) and semi-precious.

The precious and semi-precious division is a nineteenth-century commercial convention, not a gemmological one. A fine tourmaline can outvalue a poor ruby.

Hardness governs how a stone should be worn. Pearl and coral are among the softest gems used in jewellery, so they need protective settings and separate storage.

In Indian jewellery, stones are frequently chosen for astrological correspondence rather than for appearance.
