Clasp

Clasps & ConstructionAlso called clasps, fastener, closure

The fastening that closes a necklace or bracelet. The most common point of failure and the most overlooked part of a purchase.

Every clasp trades security against ease of use. A lobster clasp is secure and fiddly one-handed; a magnetic clasp is effortless and comes undone.

On multi-line pieces the clasp also has to hold the rows apart and in order, so it is a structural component rather than an accessory.

Clasp quality is a fair proxy for overall build quality. A well-made piece rarely carries a cheap clasp.

When you are buying

Open and close the clasp several times before buying. If it is awkward in a shop with good light, it will be worse at home in a hurry, and a piece that is annoying to put on stops being worn.
