Dosham-Free Pearl

Care & AuthenticityAlso called dosha free, dosham free, flawless pearl

A pearl free of the specific flaws that Vedic astrology considers inauspicious — cracks, pits, spots and irregular colour.

Classical texts list defects, or doshas, that are held to negate a gemstone's benefit: cracks, holes, dull patches, spots and uneven colour.

For astrological wear the pearl must therefore be visually clean in a way that ordinary jewellery does not require, which is why dosham-free pearls carry a premium.

The pearl is usually half-drilled or set undrilled so the visible face stays whole, since a hole through the display surface counts as a defect.

When you are buying

Ask for the pearl to be certified untreated and confirm how it will be drilled before it is set. Both are hard to correct after the fact.
