Restringing
Replacing the thread a strand is built on. Routine maintenance, not repair, and overdue on most pearl necklaces.
Silk thread stretches and absorbs body oils. As it stretches, gaps open between the pearls and the strand starts to hang loose.
The rule of thumb is every one to two years with regular wear, or immediately if you can see thread between the pearls.
Restringing is also the chance to upgrade: adding knots, changing the clasp, or reordering pearls for better matching.
When you are buying
Factor restringing into what a pearl necklace costs to own. It is inexpensive, and it is far cheaper than recovering pearls from a floor.
Knotting
A knot tied between each pearl on the thread. It stops pearls rubbing and limits a break to a single lost pearl.
Stringing
The thread a strand is built on, and the craft of assembling it.
Clasp
The fastening that closes a necklace or bracelet. The most common point of failure and the most overlooked part of a purchase.
Pearl Care
Pearls are soft and porous. They need to go on last, come off first, and be stored apart from everything else.
