Red corundum, the second hardest gem after diamond. Manik in Hindi, and the stone of the Sun in Vedic astrology.
Ruby and sapphire are the same mineral, corundum. Red corundum is called ruby; every other colour is sapphire.
Colour is what drives price. The most valued is a strong pure red with a hint of blue, historically called pigeon's blood.
Almost all commercial ruby is heat treated to improve colour and clarity, which is normal, stable and expected. Glass-filled ruby is a different thing entirely and is worth a fraction as much.
When you are buying
Ask specifically whether a ruby is heat treated or glass filled. Heat is fine and universal; lead glass filling is a repair that fails under ordinary jewellery cleaning.
