Blue Sapphire

Gemstones & CutsAlso called neelam, neelamani, blue corundum

Blue corundum. Neelam in Hindi, the stone of Saturn, and the most cautiously prescribed gem in Vedic astrology.

Sapphire is corundum in any colour but red, so the same mineral gives blue, yellow, pink and colourless stones.

Kashmir, Burmese and Ceylon origins carry a premium, with Kashmir cornflower blue the most sought after of all.

It is 9 on the Mohs scale, hard enough for daily wear in a ring, which is why sapphires survive generations of use.

When you are buying

Astrologers usually advise a trial period with a blue sapphire before it is set permanently, because it is held to act quickly. Whatever you make of that, it is the custom, and a jeweller who ignores it is not serving an astrological buyer well.
