Pure Pearls Glossary
Stud Size
The pearl diameter on a stud earring. 6mm to 8mm is everyday; 9mm and up is a statement.
Stud size is read against the earlobe, so it looks larger on the ear than the same pearl does in a necklace.
Small studs of 4mm to 5mm suit children and second piercings. 6mm to 7mm is the classic adult everyday stud. 8mm and above reads as occasion jewellery.
Weight matters as much as diameter. Above about 10mm, a solid pearl stud starts to drag on the piercing.
When you are buying
Buy button-shaped pearls for studs rather than fully round ones. The flat back sits properly against the ear and costs less for the same visible size.
