A stud is the simplest earring: a pearl on a post, secured behind the ear by a push back, screw back or butterfly clip.
Pearl studs are the most-worn pearl item in most collections, because they suit every context from an office to a wedding.
The back matters more than buyers expect. A push back on a heavy pearl works loose and is the commonest way a single earring is lost.
When you are buying
Ask for screw backs on anything above about 7mm. The small extra cost is far less than replacing a single lost pearl stud, which usually means replacing the pair.
