Pure Pearls Glossary
Button
Round from the front, flattened from the side. The standard shape for stud earrings.
A button pearl is a squashed sphere: circular in outline, compressed through its depth.
The flat side sits flush against a post or a setting, so the pearl stays put and does not stand awkwardly off the ear.
Because they are less desirable in strands, buttons cost less per millimetre than rounds while presenting an identical face.
When you are buying
For studs, button is the right shape and a round pearl is money wasted. Nobody sees the back of an earring.

Stud
An earring that sits directly on the lobe, held by a post through the piercing.
Coin
A flat, round disc. Large surface area for the weight, so it makes bold pieces that stay light.
Mabe Pearl
A half-dome pearl grown against the inside of the shell rather than free in the tissue. Flat-backed, so it suits rings and pendants.
Flat
Deliberately flattened pearls, including squares, pentagons and irregular tablets.
