Body Colour
A pearl's dominant underlying colour, before any overtone is considered.
Body colour comes from the donor mantle tissue and the species of mollusc. Freshwater mussels naturally give white, cream, peach, pink and lavender.
It is judged with the pearl on a neutral white surface in indirect daylight. Any coloured background or artificial light shifts the reading.
Strong, saturated body colours in freshwater pearls are usually the result of dye.
When you are buying
Decide on body colour before grade. A grade improvement you cannot see is worth less than a colour that actually suits the wearer.

Overtone
A translucent secondary colour lying over a pearl's main body colour, most often rose, silver or green.
Exotic Pearl Colours
Pearls outside the white and cream range: pink, peach, lavender, grey, golden, blue, green and multi-shaded strands.
Dyed Pearl
A real pearl whose colour has been added after harvest. Standard practice, and entirely fine when it is disclosed.
Multi Shaded
A piece deliberately strung from pearls of different colours, arranged as a gradient or a scatter.
