Ghungroo

Clasps & ConstructionAlso called ghungru, gejje, salangai

A small metal bell strung onto anklets and jewellery, so the piece is heard as well as seen.

A ghungroo is a hollow sphere with a pellet inside, closed except for a slit that lets the sound out.

Strings of them are worn by Kathak and Bharatanatyam dancers, where the count and tone are part of the performance.

On everyday anklets a few bells are strung between beads, giving a soft sound rather than a dancer's ring.

When you are buying

Bells clog with soap and skin oil and go dull. They can be rinsed and dried, but they should not be soaked with the rest of the piece.
