Pendant
A single ornament hung from a chain or strand, worn as the focal point of a necklace.
A pendant hangs from a bail, the loop that connects it to the chain. Bail size dictates what thickness of chain the pendant will accept.
Pearl pendants either present one large pearl, usually a South Sea or a good baroque, or set smaller pearls into a metal design.
A pendant is the most economical way to own a large pearl, since a single pearl carries the whole piece.
When you are buying
If you want one impressive pearl, buy it as a pendant rather than in a strand. The same money buys a considerably better single pearl.

South Sea Pearl
The largest commercially grown pearl, from the gold-lipped or silver-lipped oyster. Typically 9mm to 16mm, white to deep gold.
Side Pendant
A necklace whose pendant sits off to one side rather than at the centre front.
Chain
Linked metal forming a flexible necklace or bracelet, sold by length, gauge and link pattern.
